What Is White Chocolate Matcha Cookies?

White Chocolate Matcha Cookies are a vibrant fusion dessert that blends earthy Japanese green tea powder with creamy cocoa butter morsels. This flavor profile originated in the Uji region of Japan, later becoming a global confectionery staple through modern “East meets West” bakeries. What makes this treat unique is the umami balance provided by the L-theanine in the tea, which cuts through the high sugar content of the chocolate.

Home cooks favor this recipe because the chlorophyll creates a naturally striking aesthetic without artificial dyes, offering a gourmet antioxidant-rich snack using a simple creaming method. If you enjoy wholesome, easy-to-prep treats, you might also like these Banana Oatmeal Bars. The result is a chewy, sophisticated cookie that balances bitterness and sweetness perfectly.

Why Youโ€™ll Love White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

Iโ€™ve always believed that the best food tells a story, and these cookies are no different. They became a favorite in my own home because they offer a gentle pause in a busy day.

My kids, and later my grand kids, always enjoyed helping to roll out the dough, and the unique green color always got a chuckle. Here’s why I think theyโ€™ll find a special place in your kitchen too:

A Gentle Sweetness: If you’re tired of cookies that are just sugar bombs, these are for you. The matcha provides a lovely, slightly earthy balance to the white chocolate, creating a flavor thatโ€™s more nuanced.
Something Different: Matcha might seem fancy, but it’s just a green tea powder. It adds a beautiful color and a sophisticated, yet approachable, flavor that stands out from the usual chocolate chip.
Perfectly Chewy: The combination of confectioners’ sugar and egg yolks gives these White Chocolate Matcha Cookies a wonderful, tender texture that melts in your mouth.
Great for Making Ahead: You can prepare the dough in advance and keep it in the fridge, making it easy to bake a fresh batch whenever the mood strikes.

How To Make White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

Letโ€™s Cook: White Chocolate Matcha Cookies
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, sift together your all-purpose flour and matcha powder. Sifting helps to break up any lumps in the matcha and ensures an even green color throughout your White Chocolate Matcha Cookies. Set this bowl aside for now.
Cream the Butter
Using either a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or a hand mixer, cream the softened unsalted butter until it’s smooth and light. This usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes. This step helps create air pockets for a tender cookie.
Add the Sugar
Slowly add the confectionersโ€™ sugar to your creamed butter. Mix until itโ€™s fully combined and the mixture looks fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to make sure everything gets mixed in.
Incorporate Egg Yolks
Now, add in the two large egg yolks. Mix these well until they are fully incorporated into the butter and sugar mixture. The yolks add richness and help with the texture of your White Chocolate Matcha Cookies.
Mix in Dry Ingredients
Carefully add the flour and matcha mixture to your wet ingredients. Mix until everything is just combined. This might take a few minutes, but keep mixing until no dry streaks of flour remain. Chef Thomasโ€™s Tip: Be gentle here. Overmixing your flour can lead to tough cookies, and we want tender ones.
Add White Chocolate Chips
Fold in the white chocolate chips. Mix just enough so they are evenly distributed throughout the dough. You don’t want to overwork the dough at this point.
Prepare and Shape Dough
Turn the cookie dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the dough in half to create two manageable portions. Roll each portion into a cylinder, about 1 ยฝ inches (4 cm) in diameter and 7 inches (18 cm) long. Try to make them as even as possible.
Chill the Dough
Wrap each dough cylinder tightly in plastic wrap. Store them in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours. This chilling step is important for the dough to firm up and for the flavors to meld together properly.
Slice and Arrange
Once your dough is chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Unwrap the dough and, using a sharp knife, slice each cylinder into ยผ-inch rounds. Lay these rounds about 1 inch apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This spacing allows the White Chocolate Matcha Cookies to spread a little without touching.
Bake the Cookies
Bake your cookies in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes. You’ll know they’re ready when the edges just start to lightly brown. Don’t worry if they still look a little soft in the middle; they will firm up as they cool.
Cool and Enjoy
Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Let the White Chocolate Matcha Cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This prevents them from breaking and helps them set.

Tips For Best White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

Always use softened butter, not melted, for the best cookie texture. It should give a little when you press it.
Don’t skip the chilling step. It prevents spreading and helps the flavors develop beautifully.
Use a good quality matcha powder. Culinary grade is perfect for baking and will give a vibrant color without bitterness.
Matcha can clump, so sifting it with the flour ensures an even distribution and color in your cookies.
Bake until the edges just start to brown lightly. Overbaked matcha cookies can lose their vibrant green color and delicate flavor.

How I Serve White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

I find White Chocolate Matcha Cookies are best enjoyed simply. They pair wonderfully with a warm cup of coffee or a traditional green tea. Many sources suggest that green tea offers numerous health benefits due to its rich antioxidant content.

Sometimes, Iโ€™ll dust them with a little extra confectionersโ€™ sugar right before serving for a delicate look. They also make a lovely addition to a cookie platter if youโ€™re sharing with friends and family. Their distinct color always catches the eye, making them a nice conversation starter.

The Small Detail That Makes Chocolate Matcha Cookies Work

Many bakers casually add white chocolate as a simple mix-in, overlooking how its high sugar content can easily overwhelm the tea’s delicate flavor. I noticed a consistent pattern where the vibrant green would dull during the bake.

The key adjustment is ensuring your butter is at room temperature to create a stable emulsion. This prevents the dough from spreading too thin, which leads to over-browning and masks the fresh, grassy notes.

That one adjustment made this recipe far more reliable for me.

Variations and Adjustments for White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

While I love these White Chocolate Matcha Cookies just as they are, it’s fun to play around sometimes. You could swap the white chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips if you prefer a richer, more intense flavor contrast.

Another idea is to add a quarter teaspoon of almond extract with the egg yolks for a subtle nutty note. If you’re feeling adventurous, a pinch of ground ginger can also complement the matcha beautifully. Remember, cooking is about trying new things and seeing what you like best.

Storing and Making White Chocolate Matcha Cookies Ahead

These White Chocolate Matcha Cookies store well, which is always a bonus in a busy home. Once fully cooled, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze the baked cookies for up to 2 months.

Just make sure they are completely cooled before freezing, and thaw them at room temperature. The dough itself can be made ahead and kept wrapped tightly in the fridge for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months. If freezing the dough, just let it thaw slightly in the fridge before slicing and baking.

FAQ About White Chocolate Matcha Cookies

What is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. It’s known for its vibrant green color and unique, slightly bitter, earthy flavor.

Why use confectionersโ€™ sugar instead of granulated sugar?

Confectioners’ sugar, also known as powdered sugar, gives these cookies a very tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture. It also helps them spread less and contributes to a smoother dough.

Can I use regular butter for this recipe?

Yes, you can use regular salted butter if that’s all you have. Just omit the pinch of salt from the recipe. Unsalted butter gives you more control over the saltiness in your baking.

Why do you only use egg yolks?

Using only egg yolks adds richness and tenderness to the White Chocolate Matcha Cookies without adding extra moisture from the whites. This helps create that desirable soft, chewy texture.

How long do these cookies stay fresh?

Once baked and fully cooled, these cookies will stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for about 3 to 4 days. They tend to taste best within the first couple of days.

Can I freeze the cookie dough?

Yes, you can freeze the cookie dough. Roll it into cylinders as instructed, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and then in foil. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before slicing and baking.
